What was your path towards publication like?
After the publication of The Language of Leadership, it was fairly easy to get other publishers interested in my books. I like to write, had many outlines, and so was able to select those that were most appropriate for the lines various publishers carried.
What is your biggest obstacle when it comes to pitching yourself as an author and what steps have you taken to overcome that obstacle?
I don't like marketing.
On occasion, I have partnered with someone else to divide the labors of writing (which I enjoy) and marketing (which they enjoy). It works, but when I don't have a partner, I force myself to contact those who may be interested in my books or proposals.
How do you balance your life as an author with your duties as a business person, employee, parent and/or spouse?
I make a list every day of what has to be done in each arena. It's hard for me to relax until I've met my various, self-imposed obligations.
What is your best advice for getting past writer's block? To be honest, I don't believe it exists. If you are alive, you are thinking. And, if you are thinking, you can record your thoughts.
What if you have no thoughts about the book you wish to write?
Rubbish--it's all in your head--quite literally. There are several options available to you for getting those thoughts out of your head and onto paper or a computer screen.
What was the best writing-related advice you ever received?
I once heard a famous writer say if the idea for a book is still tickling your brain after six months, that's a book you should write. It's hard, when we have dozens of book-ideas, to choose the one to bring to fruition, but the six-month criterion has been useful for me.
Can you tell us a little bit about your latest book?
Jesus, Jonas, and Janus: The Leadership Triumvirate is a compilation of tips, tools, and techniques to help leaders demonstrate principled behaviors, to learn from nature, and to explore their own creativity.
How did you come up with the idea for your book?
The book was based on a speech of the same title I had given years ago.
What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?
It was a challenge to align specific incidents from the life and myths surrounding these three figures and use those incidents as exemplars of leadership. But, I knew it could be done.
Did you have to do any special research for your book?
Not being especially religious, I had to learn more about the life of Jesus for this book.
If you could choose just one thing for your book to accomplish, what would it be?
I'd like to help others develop the self-confidence that leads towards accomplishment and leads away from destructive and self-destructive behaviors.
