Why Do You Blog?
I Recommend Your purchase supports this site. |
I was recently approached by a University student for a research paper on blogging for business and it got me thinking, "Why do you blog?" Whether you blog for personal reasons or for business purposes, I'd love to know your answer.
Answer this question, "Why do you blog?", in the comments area of this post by March 28, 2008 and you could win the book, Start A Real Home-Based Business by Dan Furman. Compliments of Self-Counsel Press.
In Start A Real Home-Based Business you will discover how the author went from failure to success by testing the waters of various home businesses before settling on one specific idea: writing and business consulting. And you will learn from his mistakes as you takes you through the process of starting your business from the ground floor. You'll also receive a CD-Rom filled with 8 marketing materials designed to get your business going in the right direction.
If I were reviewing the book, I'd tell you that it is loaded with lots of good information designed to get you pointed in the right direction. However, don't buy it for the CD-Rom as I found the materials to be less than adequate. Buy it for the content in the book, itself.
This book could be yours, FREE!
All you have to do to enter our drawing is leave your name and email address in the comments below along with your answer to our question, "Why do you blog?". If you have a blog or website with a contact form that you'd prefer to leave instead of your email address, you can leave the link. We just need some way to contact you.
One winner will be selected to win this book. Good luck!

I started a blog in January and called it Write Here! as a way of making myself write on a regular basis.
Writing a blog helps me to stick to my goals. I made a New Year's resolution (and stated it on my blog) to write on it every day. I have stated a goal for every month since and found it easier to stick to them.
I write a blog to practice my writing and to develop skills, with the intention of being able to earn a living from writing and make use of two degrees.
I write another blog in the hope I will be able to help student parents, having studied English Literature for seven years, while working and raising two daughters as a single parent.
I find there are lots of benefits to blogging, including having fun, learning new things and being a member of a supportive writing community.
I blog because it is therapy for me. I like that I can write about random subjects, I enjoy the multi-media aspect, and the communication with like-minded individuals.
But most of all, I blog because I am totally addicted!

Those are all greaet reasons for blogging! May I make a suggestion? Now that you've figured how how blogging works for you, turn your "Write Here" blog into a way to push your freelance writing business.
Change the theme to show others what you've done to get your foot in the publishing world. It could be anything from listing a new publication you found to write for, to sharing a query letter that was successful or got rejected, to announcing places you've been published for pay, to just talking about the world of freelance writing.
Just a thought...
Hi,
I have all the standard reasons too. To be a better writer. To help people. All that stuff. However, I have more mundain reasons for my two blogs. I do it to increase my writing business (www.edcanderson.com) and as a online business on the other.(www.masteringyourquest.com) I am not a total mercenary though. I expect that others will find my writing useful and enlightening.

Ed, I like your first blog. It's written with both authority and a learning curve. That's hard to balance. I like how you teach and instruct while still showing potential clients that you have what it takes to help their businesses. And the conversational style is nice, too. Thanks for sharing.
I blog to keep my friends and family updated on our life. We do not live close to family members, in fact, some live half a world away. I am not good at getting pictures mailed out to people, but I will post often on a blog. It has been a great way to have an old-fashioned "circle letter" with today's technology.
I was counseled at a writer's conference, that if I wanted to start a blog I should make sure it focuses on one central theme. My theme is everyday family life. Since we are now in the process on adopting two children from Liberia there is never a dull moment.

Debbie what a great way to use your blog! I agree, blogs should have one central theme, i.e. family life, business purpose, showing off your art, etc.
I stopped by your blog. What a lovely family! And I like your consistency in blogging, I have to get better with that, myself. I do great for awhile then life gets the better of me and posting becomes sporadic and then I pick back up again.
DM, thank you so much for taking time to visit my blog, and for such great advice!
I know so little about freelance writing and all of it is theory as I'm yet to be published (unless you count Helium) but you've made me think ... perhaps I could write it as a journey into freelance writing, the story of a total beginner.
Maybe it will even make me send some query letters! I need to make that first step, but applying for work without a portfolio is scary!
I guess that's a good place to start a blog about it all though ...
:o)
I blog because I like to but also because I view it as another way for me to reach my target audience and gain higher search engine rankings.
We love to blog because it is a wonderful way to meet others who are creative. All of your reviews are very insightful...you have a wonderful way with words!
Happy Easter!
Have a blessed and wonderful day!

AnnaLaura, That's a great reason to blog! And an inexpensive marketing tool.
Kari and Kisja, thanks so much for the sweet compliment on my reviews. I can sometimes agonize over them, worried that I will write something no one wants to read since there are so many reviews online these days.
I started a blog earlier this year, when I was put on medical leave due to complications with diabetes. Writing everyday or every few days not only helps me stick to my writing goals but it helps me to stick to my personal goals as well.
This book looks interesting. I started blogging to make new friends with kindred spirits, to write and to share life, art and inspirations. It has been so much fun meeting new people through this venue.
Annon, I hope you'll come back and leave some way for us to contact you for the drawing.
Tammy, I think that's one thing I like about blogging, too. Meeting new people. I especially visit blogs more when the writers actually respond to the comments we, readers, make--whether privatley or on the blog.
I have not started blogging. I do write in a journal at night to help clear my head before I go to bed.

I blog because it helps me to relive tension and express myself freely without the pressure of someone being in my face or space with a response that sometimes I don't want to here. Also when I blog I feel empowered in a way. It feels like someone is waiting to read what I have to say and what I say matters. But rather it matters or not is not the issue but the fact that it's being read is gratifying.

Sylvia, that's so on the mark! I totally agree with you. Even if no one reads my blogs, I feel empowered to be able to jusr share my thoughts. Some more personal things go in my private journal and that release is also empowering.
I blog so that I may breathe easier. Yeah, you know all that clutter than your mind gathers over a day or week and finally you want to scream with the build up. So, I blog. I write poetry, short stories, bits and pieces of my life, my pain, misery, angry, frustration and sometimes just plain ol' nonsense. I blog as a release! That simple. It's much cheaper than therapy and I have made many new friends and learned so much in the process about myself.
Congratulations Debbie Googeg
